How to get the firmware and what’s my MMI version?

Without firmware you can’t update your MMI, it’s also quite important when you want to update maps – it will not be working without latest firmware!

If you know what type of MMI you have, you can jump straight to the installation manual (click here to get there).

First of all, you have to recognise which MMI is in your car.

The best way is just to go to the Engineering menu and check the current firmware version.

You can enter there by pressing the CAR and SETUP (or sometimes MENUor BACK) buttons on your MMI console.

When you are in red engineering menu, you will see screen like above.

Most Trans it’s your current MMI version.

There are different MMIs, so before purchasing make sure you are getting right software for right MMI.

Types of MMI

What’s my MMI?

When you are already in Engineering Menu you can now recognise your MMI, so:

  • MMI 2G: SW: XX-XX XX.X.X XXXX
  • MMI 3G Low/Basic: BNav_XX_XXXXX
  • MMI 3G High: HNav_XX_XXXXX
  • MMI 3G+: HN+_XX_XXXXX or HN+R
  • MMI RMC: RMC_XX_XXXXX

About MMI 3G Plus

You might have HN+ or HN+R, the difference between them it’s that they have been installed in different cars.

  1. MMI 3G PLUS with firmware starting from HN+ has been installed in Audi A4/A5/Q5/Q7.
  2. MMI 3G PLUS with firmware starting from HN+R has been installed in Audi A6/A7/A8/Q3

Is it important to get correct software, because if you for example choose HN+ for Audi A6 it will not working.

How to prepare SDCARDs?

When you have bought the firmware and already downloaded them, you have to unzip and copy on to root folder of SD CARD.

Extract downloaded files – how to do? Click here – there’s a complete guide how to deal with downloaded files.

IF YOU HAVE BOUGHT BUNDLE PACK! DO NOT COPY FIRMWARE FILES WITH MAPS FILES AND ACTIVATOR ON THE SAME SDCARD. EVERY UPDATE MUST BE DONE SEPARATELY!

ADAM

When you have already unpacked the files with firmware go inside newly created folder and you will see something like on the screenshot bellow.

Keep in mind the file list might be different for EU and USA / Canada so do not count the files etc. for example like this

image

and copy all of those files directly on to SDCARD, without parent folder like HN+_xxxxx

Screenshot 2019 10 19 at 13.20.54
Video it’s about the Maps update, but it’s the same procedure for all updates.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT USE MACOS TO COPY THE FILES. MACOS CREATING LOTS OF HIDDEN FILES AND MMI CAN BE LITTLE BIT CONFUSED AND DISPLAY ERROR. SD CARD MUST BE FORMATTED AS FAT32!

What if I got Bose / Bang Olufsen audio system?

Caution: If your car is equipped with BOSE (8RQ or 8RY) or BANG & OLUFSEN sound system and don’t know how to recode it… we recommend that you unselect it from list (using User- Defined Mode) before update.

Or you can use the fibre optic loop adapter, you can buy one here!

PLEASE AWARE!!!!! FOR MIB units you need to use this optic loop!! on Mib you can’t use hidden green menu as there’s no option to enable it.

If you have Mib1 / Mib2 / RMC and bose or B&O, you must use this fibre optic loop adapter, otherwise bose system will stop working properly!!

fibre optic loop
Fibre optic loop

Or you can unselect BOSE module to update in User-defined mode

How to enable User Defined mode?

You will need access to the Hidden Green Menu

Go in to Hidden green menu

Green Menu 1
Hidden green menu
Hidden green menu

Scroll down and find SWDL

Hidden green menu > SWDL
Hidden green menu > SWDL

Go in to this option

Hidden green menu > SWDL > user defined mode
Hidden green menu > SWDL > user defined mode

and tick that options

ignore regions and user defined mode

after that you can follow tutorial and check if BOSE / BANG & OLUFSEN its unselected for update.

Find BoseG3_Q7 or BoseG3_  or BSG3C7_ANC or BO_Q7 / BO_D4 / BO_C7 / AMP_LC_P (depends of car model you have, always will be starting with BSG/Bose/BO) and take every tick off until there is a letter N near Bose. To do it, you need to enter to this item, and change near all items to N in all second rows. So, finally near Bose should stand N.

After 30-60 minutes (it depends on what it has to be updated) the firmware update will be done.

Scroll to bottom and press “Continue”. On the next screen select the “Abort documentation” and the MMI will reboot.

Once the system has rebooted, the download application may show a screen that displays the update progress of various devices. As soon as all devices have registered with the upgrade application, the update process is activated, and the progress is shown on the screen.

The system may reboot many times during the update and programming session. This is carried out completely automatically and does not required you to take any action. Once the system has rebooted, updating is continued and the “Download progress” screen is displayed many times.

Device Summary screen will be displayed at the end of the update and will show you if there are any errors. If there are errors (components with NOK) status the “Retry”option will be enabled, select it and retry the failed component update. If all components are with status OK or N/A scroll down and select “Continue

Because you don’t have connection to Audi SVM you have to “Cancel documentation” here. This is the reason for ECU ERROR CODE: 03276 Please Check Software Version Management in 5F Information Electr.

Google Earth / Audi Connect – has stop working after update.

If your car is equipped with SIMCARD slot, and after firmware update Audi Connect / Google earth layer doesn’t work, you need to run again update and reinstall GEMMI part. You might also need to re-install script to run green menu.

Make sure you have enabled user defined mode

  • Go to Hidden Green Menu,
  • Go to SWDL tab
  • and tick User Defined

Hidden Green Menu -> user defined mode

then exit green menu by pressing Media or other button on MMI console.

Go to Engineering Menu and perform update, then select User Defined Mode, and try to find on the list GEMMI, go inside and tick every option in the submenus – Please select just APPLICATION, do not select BOOTLOADER

and perform update. After that your Google Earth / Audi connect will start working again.

Audi RSE – Rear Seat Entertainment – how to update?

If you own an Audi car with RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) it also has to be updated, the whole procedure looks the same like for main MMI unit, there are just different buttons combination.

RSE 1

And you can follow rest of installation which looks the same as for front MMI unit. Just keep in mind there’s a different buttons combinations.

check firmware

If you don’t have that big SDCARD, you can use any pendrive, but you will need cable MMI -> USB ( you can buy it here) I’m doing like that, and everything works properly! Just make sure to format it as FAT32!

Simple process, just upgraded firmware on my Audi A1 in 15 minutes tops, all working perfectly, had to re-activate the green menu after the update, now ready for the maps update! I quickly asked in chat what was the right firmware/maps I needed to buy, very quick reply and all is pretty much simple.

Hello, I updated my firmware and everything is OK… I mean all are how should be… The menu, car, options, you can scroll down up all are perfect… But I don’t have any letters on the display… So if you know them by heart is OK… You can use everything… But if not is useless… Can you please advise me on how to fix this?
Thanks

I love that you’re providing this service. Unfortunately, I’m having a bit of trouble this time. Upgraded the firmware of my 3G Plus MMI to firmware version HN+_US_AU3G_K0942_6. Afterwards, the AudiConnect/Google Earth menu was no longer available. So I followed your instructions to set the Green Menu to user defined update, checked the GEMMI application (not bootloader) and tried again. The installation process stops at 4% and I get “device reports error – error code 141”. I’ve retried several times – all to no avail. Any suggestions on how to fix this are much appreciated. Thanks much!

Ok, I’m confused. does the N have to have white arrow on or off? and if all goes well, do we have to go back and turn them on?

In my case, BoseG3-Q7 is coming up as N/A and cannot change any settings within BoseG3-Q7.

Is it okey to go ahead with N/A? Thanks

After installing the green menu, which worked perfect, setting de settings in the green menu to go on with the firmware upgrade (because i have a Bose system), the data on the sd-card is not regonized. I tried both slots…. nothing happening, response is no data and no upgrade. Checked the data on SD-card on a normal computer, everything is there…. how come?

Hello everyone!
Bough Firmware for my Audi A7 2013 HN+R

It did took me few hours to get around it but eventually I have done it.
P.S. I was able to get in to the Green Menu only after I have enabled Servicing mode in VCDS. (Otherwise you would not be able to get in to Green Menu). Rest of the steps were OK. Installation took ~50 minutes.

Peace to everyone.

Hi, I purchased a bundle for MMI Firmware Upgrade and EU Maps. I downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade. But I think it may have not updated completely. In my car, it says
Most Train: HN+R_EU_AU_P1001
MU Software: 0592

Isn’t that MU Software supposed to become 1001 as well? Before the update, Most Train was 0592 as well.

Then I tried to install the new maps, but I am having trouble with it. First, on the green menu, deleting the nav says there’s no database to be deleted. After that I hit delete the partition and that one was completed.

When restarting MMI and trying to install the new EU maps I got from you, when doing the step where you manually check those Application things under AUDI_MMI3G_ECE one by one, I cannot check them.

Also, on the AUDI_MMI3G_ECE mine says “N/A” , not “?” like on the video. Can you tell me what is wrong and how I can fix it? I contacted a service that deals with these things, and he said I’ve done smth wrong, as you have to do conversion first (from Korean to EU), then do mmi firmware upgrade and then navigation maps update (asking for 250 Euro) to do that for me.

How do you do conversion from Korean to EU in order to then upgrade firmware?

I would prefer not having to pay that much money, since I already paid once for the bundle here.

You can see my mmi version here https://imgur.com/uLT69sa

Hello Gurus,

I got the bundle for my 2010 Q7 TDI with Bose audio.

  1. I successfully enabled the green menu with the script and enabled user defined mode.
  2. Started the fw update in user defined mode but i don’t see any options for Bose (starting with BSG/Bose/BO). All i see is
  3. ARU9331 – status “S”
  4. DVD – status “Y”
  5. IDC_3G – status “N”
  6. DSP_716_G3 – status “N”
  7. …etc..

Am i missing something? Can i safely proceed. Appreciate any assistance.
